How to Set Yourself Apart as a Dietitian

  • May 11, 2019

Forging a successful career as a dietitian is no walk in the park. As any experienced professional will tell you, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to set yourself apart in such a competitive industry. However, if helping people live their healthiest, happiest lives is your passion, don’t be discouraged by the road ahead. Carving out a unique path for your career is possible with a little patience, commitment and the right approach.

So, how can you make yourself stand out from the crowd as a dietitian? Here are our top tips.

Play to Your Personal Strengths

It’s no secret that every individual has their own set of strengths and weaknesses. With this in mind, don’t make the mistake of dwelling on your shortcomings whilst ignoring your more positive attributes. Identify your strengths so you can include them in your professional style and market your services around them. Perhaps you’re a people person who loves talking in-depth with clients and getting to know them.  Or maybe you like to get hands-on with practical sessions rather than sitting in an office for your appointments. Whatever your strengths are, it’s important to use them in order to establish a style and approach that will appeal to clients.

While it’s still important to be flexible in your methods, as we will later discuss, having a unique flair to your services can do wonders for your reputation. It might take a while to really understand where your strengths lie, but once you do you can use them to your advantage.

Keep a Positive Mindset

We won’t sugar coat it; you are bound to come across difficult clients or situations while working in the dietetics industry. After all, it can be really emotionally draining to help people with something so vulnerable like their health. Through it all, however, it’s important to remain optimistic. This attitude will undoubtedly shine through your work and help clients feel comfortable and trusting of your services. Avoiding ‘burnout’ by setting up boundaries and practising self-care will help to keep negative mindsets at bay. By focusing on the positives and believing in the power of your work, you will forge a great reputation in the dietetics community and set yourself up for a successful career.

Learn How to be Flexible In Your Work

As a dietitian, you will come across clients with a variety of different needs, problems and goals, and it’s your job to provide them with the best advice for their particular situation. This is why flexibility is an integral part of being a dietitian, as it allows you to broaden your knowledge and help a wider range of people. If you can’t work dynamically across different areas of the dietetics world, you might find yourself ‘boxed in’ to a particular niche. This can be particularly difficult for new dietitians, as it can limit the types of clients who access your services and subsequently hinder your career progression as a result of this.

On a more practical level, many dietitians tend to work in multiple practices with varying work hours. This commitment to putting in the time and effort outside of the standard 9-5 hours is what makes many dietitians successful. Being able to organise your time effectively and stay motivated despite long hours and travel requirements will improve your service and set you apart from the rest.
